Cataloged in the catalogue raisonné and reproduced in the book O Alienista by Machado de Assis—an edition produced under the direction and initiative of Raymundo de Castro Maya for charitable purposes—it was illustrated by Candido Portinari with four etchings pulled by the artist in collaboration with his brother, Loy Portinari. Work began in 1945, and printing was completed on July 12, 1948.
