Barrão

Barrão (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1959) is a Brazilian contemporary artist renowned for his sculptures and installations created through the inventive recombination of everyday objects. His work explores themes such as memory, material culture, consumption, and identity, combining humor, visual exuberance, and unexpected juxtapositions.

Over the course of his career, Barrão has developed a distinctive artistic language based on the appropriation of glazed ceramics, porcelain, and decorative objects collected over many years. These items are intentionally dismantled, fragmented, and reassembled into complex sculptural compositions, resulting in hybrid forms that abandon their original function and assume entirely new identities. His works challenge conventional notions of sculpture while engaging with references to kitsch, bricolage, and popular culture.

Through this process of transformation, Barrão creates visually dynamic works that balance irony, excess, and formal sophistication, encouraging viewers to reconsider familiar objects and the cultural meanings they carry.

His solo exhibitions include Teia à Toa at the Museu Oscar Niemeyer (Curitiba, 2025); Stuck Rhyme at Night Gallery (Los Angeles, 2023); FALA COISA at Fortes D'Aloia & Gabriel | Carpintaria (Rio de Janeiro, 2022); Mashups at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum (Ridgefield, USA, 2012); and Natureza Morta at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (Lisbon, 2010).

Barrão has also participated in major group exhibitions, including Brasilidade Pós-Modernismo at the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil (Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Brasília, and Belo Horizonte, 2021); Troposphere: Chinese and Brazilian Contemporary Art at the Beijing Minsheng Art Museum (Beijing, China, 2017); and A Casa at the Museum of Contemporary Art of the University of São Paulo (MAC USP, 2015).

His work is represented in significant public collections, including the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo and the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo (MAM-SP), reinforcing his status as one of the leading figures in contemporary Brazilian sculpture.
