Arpad Szenes (Budapest, Hungary, May 6, 1897 – Paris, France, January 16, 1985) was a Hungarian painter, printmaker, illustrator, draftsman, and educator who became a naturalized French citizen in 1956. Widely regarded as an important figure in twentieth-century European modern art, his career was defined by a continuous exploration between figuration and abstraction.

His early works reveal an affinity with Surrealism, featuring expressive compositions distinguished by vivid colors and a symbolic, often ironic character. Over time, his artistic language evolved toward lyrical abstraction, producing atmospheric compositions with fluid forms and a refined palette of ochres, grays, blues, and other soft, luminous tones that became hallmarks of his mature style.

Szenes exhibited extensively in museums and galleries throughout Europe and abroad, including Portugal, France, and Brazil, earning broad international recognition. His artistic legacy is preserved through the Arpad Szenes – Vieira da Silva Foundation in Lisbon, which is dedicated to the conservation, study, and promotion of his work alongside that of Maria Helena Vieira da Silva.
