Rosângela Rennó Gomes, born in Belo Horizonte in 1962, is a renowned Brazilian intermedia artist and photographer. She graduated in architecture from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) in 1986 and in fine arts from the Guignard School in 1987. Rennó began creating her first works in the late 1980s, using family album photographs as her base.
From 1991 to 1993, she was part of Visorama, a contemporary art study group. Her work, which includes photographs, objects, videos, and installations, explores the nature of images. Rennó is known for her works based on 3 x 4 photos produced in popular studios and for the "Universal Archive" project, initiated in 1992, which consists of a virtual database with excerpts from journalistic texts that reference photographic images. She also works with photographs obtained from public and private archives, such as images of prisoners from the extinct Department of Medicine and Criminology of the Paulista Penitentiary Museum.
In 1997, Rennó earned her doctorate in arts from the School of Communications and Arts at the University of São Paulo (ECA/USP). She has received several scholarships, including from the Civitella Ranieri Foundation in Italy in 1995, the Vitae Foundation in 1998, and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation in New York in 1999. In 2003, the book "Rosângela Rennó: [The Universal Archive and Other Archives]" was published by Cosac & Naify.
