Wega Nery Gomes Pinto

Wega Nery Gomes Pinto (Corumbá, MT, 1912 - Guarujá, SP, 2007) was a Brazilian painter, draftsman, poet, and teacher. In the 1930s, she began her career by publishing poems in the magazine O Malho under the pseudonym "Vera Nunes." Between 1946 and 1949, she studied drawing and painting at the Escola de Belas Artes in São Paulo, marking the beginning of her artistic journey.

In the 1950s, Wega studied with Joaquim da Rocha Ferreira and Yoshiya Takaoka, participating in the Grupo Guanabara from 1950 to 1959. In 1953, she joined Samson Flexor's Atelier-Abstração, where she began producing her first abstract works with a geometric inclination. Two years later, she exhibited her drawings at the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (Masp).

Wega Nery participated in several editions of the São Paulo Biennial, winning the best national draftsman award in 1957 and receiving special rooms in 1963, 1973, and 1989. In the 1960s, she began creating her "imaginary landscapes," which became a hallmark of her work until the late 1980s. The artist also taught drawing and painting at the Sociedade Cívica Feminina de Santos.

In 1975, art critic Geraldo Ferraz, her companion, published the book Wega Liberta em Arte: 1954-1974. The Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo held a solo exhibition of her work in 1993, followed by a retrospective at the Centro Cultural São Paulo in 1994.
