Wanda Pimentel

Wanda Pimentel (Rio de Janeiro, 1943 - 2019) was a significant Brazilian painter, draftsman, and sculptor. She studied painting at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro under the guidance of Ivan Serpa, a pioneer of constructive art in Brazil. Pimentel's artistic career began in the early 1960s, and in 1968, she started the painting series "Envolvimento," which coincided with the height of Brazil's military dictatorship following the AI-5 decree.

The "Envolvement" series is considered a defining point of her poetic identity, blending influences from constructivism, New Figuration assemblages, American Pop Art, and graphic design. Her works from this period are characterized by smooth, flat brushstrokes depicting everyday scenes and objects with a critical and aesthetic undertone.

Some of the paintings from this series were showcased in 2015 at the "Artevida" exhibition, curated by Adriano Pedrosa and Rodrigo Moura. That same year, Pimentel exhibited 35 new works, including paintings and sculptures, reaffirming her importance in the contemporary art scene.

Pimentel's work also gained recognition in popular culture, appearing in the Brazilian soap opera "Vale Tudo" (1988) as part of the character Heleninha Roitmann's art collection, played by actress Renata Sorrah.
