Solange Pessoa

Solange Pessoa (born in 1961, Ferros, Brazil) is a contemporary Brazilian artist whose work spans installations, sculptures, drawings, and paintings. Her practice is distinguished by the use of organic materials and an ongoing investigation into the relationships between body, nature, and culture. Over the years, she has gained recognition both in Brazil and internationally, particularly within the fields of contemporary art, sculpture, and installation. She lives and works in Belo Horizonte.

Born in the state of Minas Gerais, her work is deeply influenced by the region’s geographical and historical context. Known for its colonial baroque heritage as well as its strong mining industry, Minas Gerais plays a central role in shaping her artistic research. The presence of minerals, metals, and natural formations informs a body of work that explores the boundaries between the natural and the transformed.

Since the 1980s, Pessoa has developed a practice grounded in experimentation with organic materials. Elements such as leather, hair, wax, and other natural substances are not merely supports but active agents within her work. For the artist, materials carry a sensory and symbolic dimension, engaging directly with intuition and perception.

Her work engages with contemporary discussions around materiality, the body, and transformation. Critical interpretations often associate her practice with an approach that attributes vitality to matter, shifting it from a passive condition to an active, expressive force. In this sense, her production resonates with broader debates in eco-art and feminist theory, particularly through its emphasis on organic presence as both language and concept.

In 1996–1997, she was awarded a grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, an important milestone in her international career.
