Sebastião Januário

Sebastião Januário was born in Dores de Guanhães, Minas Gerais, in 1939. A painter and draftsman, he moved to Rio de Janeiro at the age of 17 in 1956, where he began working as a waiter. In 1957, due to his military enlistment, he left his job and had some of his drawings acquired by two officers, opening doors for him in the art world. His talent was recognized by Brigadier Délio Matos, who recommended him to work as a domestic employee for the Mauro Brandão couple. During this time, Januário met painters José Paulo Moreira Fonseca and Carlos Scliar (1920-2001), the latter buying some of his works and encouraging him to pursue an artistic career.

With Carlos Scliar's help, Sebastião Januário enrolled in the free painting course taught by Ivan Serpa (1923-1973) at the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro (MAM/RJ) in the 1960s. Although he briefly attended the School of Fine Arts at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), he also studied drawing with Eduardo Sued (1925) and Oswaldo Teixeira (1905-1974) at the Institute of Fine Arts of Rio de Janeiro.

From 1964 to 1966, Sebastião Januário studied painting at the Musée D'Art Moderne de Paris [Museum of Modern Art of Paris] in France, where he honed his skills and broadened his artistic vision. His works, characterized by a strong use of colors and shapes, reflect the influence of his studies and his interactions with prominent figures in Brazilian and international art.

Sebastião Januário's story is one of talent and perseverance, having overcome numerous challenges to become a respected painter and draftsman. His journey is marked by dedication to art and the support of mentors who recognized and encouraged his potential.
