Rubens Herschmann, known as Rubens Gerchman, was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1942 and passed away in São Paulo in 2008. He was a renowned Brazilian painter, draftsman, printmaker, and sculptor.

In 1957, Gerchman began attending the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios in Rio de Janeiro, where he studied drawing. He took a woodcut course with Adir Botelho and attended the National School of Fine Arts (Enba) from 1960 to 1961. His artistic career gained prominence in 1967 when he was awarded a trip abroad at the 16th National Salon of Modern Art (SNAM), allowing him to live in New York from 1968 to 1972.

Upon returning to Brazil, Gerchman ventured into filmmaking, scripting, designing, and directing the film "Triunfo Hermético" and the shorts "ValCarnal" and "Behind the Broken Glass." From 1975 to 1979, he directed the School of Visual Arts at Parque Lage (EAV/Parque Lage) in Rio de Janeiro and co-founded and directed the magazine "Malasartes." In 1978, he received a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation fellowship, enabling him to return to the United States.

In 1981, at the invitation of architect Lina Bo Bardi, Gerchman created a tile panel for Sesc Fábrica Pompéia in São Paulo. The following year, he spent a year in Berlin as a resident artist, invited by the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) [German Academic Exchange Service].

In 1989, he released the book "Gerchman," with texts by art critic Wilson Coutinho, and in 1993, he published the lithograph album "Dupla Identidade," with text by poet Armando Freitas Filho. Besides his artistic production, Gerchman was a dedicated teacher, offering courses in Brazil and abroad. In 2000, he launched an album with 32 lithographs, the first volume of the "Cahier d'Artiste" collection, by Lithos Edições de Arte.
