Paolo Roversi

Paolo Roversi (born 1947, Ravenna, Italy) is one of the most influential photographers in contemporary fashion and portrait photography. Known for his delicate and contemplative aesthetic, his work is characterized by soft light, long exposures, and a timeless, almost meditative atmosphere. Throughout his career, Roversi has developed a singular visual language focused on introspection and the search for inner presence.

Roversi’s interest in photography began in his youth during a trip to Spain in the mid-1960s. Upon returning to Italy, he built a small darkroom in Ravenna, where he started experimenting with analog processes and the relationship between light and time. In 1972, he moved to Paris at the invitation of Peter Knapp, then art director of Elle magazine, a turning point that firmly established his professional path.

In the 1980s, Roversi adopted the Polaroid 8x10 camera, a medium that became central to his practice. This format allowed for a slower, more intuitive approach, stripping images down to their essentials and evoking qualities of painting, memory, and silence. His process embraces chance, imperfection, and waiting, standing apart from conventional commercial photography.

Over the years, Roversi collaborated with major fashion houses such as Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Valentino, and Comme des Garçons, and produced iconic editorials for publications including Vogue, W Magazine, and Harper’s Bazaar. He also created memorable portraits of models and artists who defined the visual culture of their time.

Alongside his editorial and commercial work, Roversi built a strong body of personal projects, published in books such as Nudi, Libretto, Studio, Angeli, and Secrets. His work has been exhibited internationally, securing his reputation as an artist who transcends the boundaries of fashion photography.
