Nicolas Vlavianos

Nicolas Vlavianos (Athens, Greece, 1929 – 2022) was a sculptor and educator, widely recognized for his contribution to modern art in Brazil. He began his artistic training in Athens between 1955 and 1956, studying painting under Costa Elíades.

He later moved to Paris, where he studied sculpture at the Académie de La Grande Chaumière with Ossip Zadkine (1890–1967) and at the Académie du Feu with Laszlo Szabo (1913–1984). In Paris, he took part in the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles in 1958 and 1959.

Settling in São Paulo in 1961, Vlavianos began teaching three-dimensional expression at the Armando Álvares Penteado Foundation (FAAP) in 1969, where he influenced generations of artists.

He received awards from major art institutions, including the 7th São Paulo International Biennial, the 1st Esso Salon of Young Artists (MAC/USP), the 1st National Biennial of Visual Arts (Salvador), and the 4th Brasília Modern Art Salon, between 1963 and 1967.

From 1972 to 1988, he participated in several editions of the Panorama of Contemporary Brazilian Art at the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo (MAM/SP). He was honored twice with the APCA Award (São Paulo Association of Art Critics), in 1974 and 2001, and received recognition at the 5th São Paulo Contemporary Art Salon.

His work has been the subject of major retrospectives at the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP) in 1993 and the FAAP Museum of Brazilian Art in 2001.
