Newton Rezende

Newton de Rezende Silva (São Paulo, São Paulo, 1912 - Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, 1994) was a prominent Brazilian painter, draftsman, printmaker, and sculptor. A self-taught artist, his artistic career spanned several decades and various media and styles.

Newton Rezende began his artistic journey as a self-taught painter. In 1946, he traveled to Buenos Aires, where he worked as an advertising artist, honing his skills and expanding his artistic repertoire. After returning to Brazil, he settled in Rio de Janeiro, where he held his first solo exhibition at the Institute of Brazilian Architects (IAB/RJ).

His talent and dedication quickly garnered recognition. In 1962, he participated in the International Advertising Competition in Miami, United States, where he received an honorable mention. In 1968, he was awarded the title of Director of the Year by the Brazilian Art Directors Club, cementing his reputation in the advertising field.

In addition to his work in advertising, Newton Rezende also excelled in the visual arts. In 1980, renowned art critic Ferreira Gullar wrote a book about his work, published by Galeria Bonino, which highlighted his unique contribution to Brazilian art.

His work's importance was recognized by various institutions. In 1983, Rede Globo paid tribute to him on the program "Noite Única". Three years later, in 1986, he was honored by Riotur, reaffirming his lasting impact on Rio de Janeiro's cultural scene.
