Miguel Rio Branco

Miguel da Silva Paranhos de Rio Branco (born 1946 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain) is a renowned photographer, cinematographer, and painter. As the son of a diplomat, he spent his childhood and adolescence in Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Switzerland, and the United States. A self-taught painter, he held his first exhibition in 1964 at a gallery in Bern, Switzerland.

Education and Early Career:
In 1966, Miguel Rio Branco studied at the New York Institute of Photography and, two years later, at the Escola Superior de Desenho Industrial (Esdi) in Rio de Janeiro. From 1969 to 1981, he directed experimental films and worked as a cinematographer and cameraman for filmmakers such as Gilberto Loureiro and Júlio Bressane, while also working as a documentary photographer.

Photography and Recognition:
Between 1978 and 1982, he was a correspondent for Magnum Photos in Paris, gaining recognition for his use of saturated colors in his work. In the 1980s, he began creating audiovisual installations that combined photography, painting, and film, frequently exhibiting both in Brazil and internationally.

Awards and Publications:
Miguel Rio Branco has received numerous awards throughout his career, including the Kodak Award for Photographic Critique in 1982, the Vitae Foundation Art Grant in 1994, and the National Photography Award from the National Art Foundation (Funarte) in 1995. He is the author of several books, including "Dulce Sudor Amargo" (1985), "Nakta" (1986), "Miguel Rio Branco" (1998), "Silent Book" (1998), and "Entre Olhos o Deserto" (2001).
