Matthew Pillsbury

Matthew Pillsbury (born 1973 in Neuilly, France) is a Franco-American photographer known for his long exposure photographs using only available light. Pillsbury's work primarily focuses on urban life, the passage of time, and the relationship between disconnection and unification brought about by modern technology. His most renowned series, titled "Screen Lives," captures how people interact with and are absorbed by the screens that dominate their lives.

Artistic Journey:
In "Screen Lives," Pillsbury uses long exposures to capture people watching television, using computers, and engaging with mobile devices. Through these images, he seeks to expose not only technological dependence but also offer an intimate glimpse into people's lives. "Seeing the photos, I realized that something truly magical had happened," Pillsbury said. "You had these familiar environments and scenes, yet seeing a long exposure of it, it was truly transformed into something magical and surprising."

In addition to technology, Pillsbury also focuses on iconic public spaces such as the Louvre, Coney Island, and the Astoria Park pool in New York.

Education and Career:
Matthew Pillsbury was born in Neuilly, France, and graduated from Yale in 1994. In 2004, he earned his MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York, where he currently resides. His passion for technology began in childhood when, without a television at home, he watched TV at friends' houses. This experience inspired him to explore the impact of time spent in front of screens.

Pillsbury's photography has been featured in the New York Times and in monographs such as "Time Frame" (2007) and "City Stages" (2013).
