Marina Abramovic
Marina Abramovic, born in 1946 in Belgrade (then part of the former Yugoslavia), is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in contemporary art. She began her artistic journey in the 1970s after studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade. Since then, she has emerged as a trailblazer in performance art, using her own body as the primary medium of expression.
Her work explores the boundaries of physical endurance and emotional depth, often involving intense experiences of pain, resistance, vulnerability, and spiritual transformation. Throughout her career, Abramovic has developed powerful performances that push the limits of the human condition, inviting viewers into moments of presence, introspection, and connection.
A distinctive feature of her artistic practice is the transformation of everyday actions—such as lying down, sitting still, or maintaining silence—into ritualized, meditative experiences. As a key member of a generation of groundbreaking performance artists, including Bruce Nauman, Vito Acconci, and Chris Burden, Abramovic remains the only one among them still producing long-form, deeply immersive works that continue to shape and challenge the global art landscape.
