Maria Villares

Maria Villares (born 1940 in São Paulo) is a versatile artist who has lived and worked in São Paulo since the 1950s when she began her studies in drawing and painting with Nélson Nobrega and art history with Gilda Seraphico. For Maria, drawing is the guiding thread of her works, offering an unrestricted experience of artistic creation. Her career encompasses not only drawing and painting but also sculpture, printmaking, and ceramics.

In the 1970s, Maria attended courses by Carlos Fajardo and Dudi Maia Rosa, as well as the Escola Brasil de Arte. After a period of specialization and research in ceramics and sculpture in Brazil and Italy, she returned to painting and held her first solo exhibition at Galeria Nara Roesler in 1994.
