Marepe

Marepe, the artistic name of Marcos Reis Peixoto (born 1970 in Santo Antônio de Jesus, Bahia), is a renowned Brazilian visual artist. In 1988, he began studying visual arts at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) in Salvador. His first solo exhibition took place in 1990 at the Cultural Center Cruz das Almas in Cruz das Almas, Bahia. The following year, he started a degree in drawing and plastic arts at UFBA and, for his participation in the 1st Biennial of Recôncavo in São Félix, Bahia, he won a trip to Germany.

In 1992, Marepe taught at the School of Visual Arts at UFBA. In 1996, he exhibited at the 3rd Plastic Arts Salon of the Museum of Modern Art of Bahia (MAM/BA), where he received the acquisition prize. That same year, he participated in the Antarctica Artes com a Folha exhibition in São Paulo, winning a trip to Documenta in Kassel, Germany, along with artists Rivane Neuenschwander and Cabelo.

Marepe began exhibiting his works, which often reference northeastern Brazilian popular traditions, in various galleries and institutions in Brazil and abroad. In 2005, he had the opportunity to exhibit at the Centre Pompidou in Paris as part of the Year of Brazil in France events.

His works explore a variety of media and approaches, reflecting a deep engagement with northeastern culture and daily life, transforming objects and popular practices into contemporary art that resonates both in the Brazilian and international contexts.
