Marcos Coelho Benjamim

Marcos Coelho Benjamim (born 1952 in Nanuque, Minas Gerais) is a renowned Brazilian sculptor, painter, cartoonist, graphic designer, illustrator, draftsman, and set designer. In 1969, Benjamim moved to Belo Horizonte, where he began drawing comics self-taught. In 1971, he started contributing cartoons and illustrations to Minas Gerais newspapers. Between 1971 and 1972, he met artists Lotus Lobo and Noviello, as well as collector Gilberto Chateaubriand, who acquired some of his drawings. His career gained prominence when he participated in the 12th São Paulo International Biennial in 1973.

In 1974, Benjamim was awarded a trip to Mexico at the 2nd Global Winter Salon of Belo Horizonte. Three years later, he won the grand prize at the International Cartoon Exhibition in Athens. That same year, he returned to his hometown and spent a year creating toys from recycled and organic materials for his children.

In 1979, he participated in an artist caravan promoted by Paulo Laender to the Jequitinhonha Valley, where he interacted with various local artisans. This experience influenced his dedication to creating three-dimensional objects and installations. In 1988, Benjamim designed the sets for the "Uatki" and "Mulheres" performances by Grupo Corpo in Belo Horizonte.

From 1989, with an invitation to exhibit at the 20th São Paulo International Biennial, he began producing large-scale works. Benjamim remains an important figure in Brazilian art, known for his innovative use of recycled and organic materials in his creations.
