Manoel Da Marinheira

Manoel Cavalcanti de Almeida, better known as Manoel da Marinheira, was one of Brazil's most important sculptors, making history in the small town of Boca da Mata, Alagoas, 68 km from Maceió. Born in 1917, Manoel showed a natural talent for sculpture from a young age, initially helping his father with woodwork and creating small toys for himself. His father, besides working on the farm, also carved saints and animal figures out of wood.

At the age of 14, Manoel made his first sculpture, a rabbit, using a tool he secretly took from his father. This marked the beginning of his artistic journey. According to his son André, the nickname "Marinheira" originated with his grandfather, who arrived in the region on a ship and decided to stay. His grandmother became known as "the Sailor," and when Manoel was born, he became Manoel da Marinheira.

Manoel da Marinheira continued to hone his skills over the years, gaining recognition for his detailed and expressive sculptures. His work celebrates Brazilian culture and traditions, especially those of Alagoas.
