Luiz Sacilotto

Luiz Sacilotto was born in Santo André, São Paulo, and became one of the foremost figures in Brazilian concretism. He began his painting studies at the Escola Profissional Masculina do Brás from 1938 to 1943 and continued with drawing classes at the Associação Brasileira de Belas Artes from 1944 to 1947. From the start, Sacilotto showed a rejection of academic standards and an affinity with the aesthetics of the Grupo Santa Helena.

Starting in 1944, Sacilotto developed work with a strong expressionist character, which intensified by 1948, marked by vibrant colors and forms. In 1945, he reconnected with colleagues Marcelo Grassmann and Octávio Araújo, forming the Grupo Expressionista with Andreatini and Carlos Scliar. They held the "4 Novíssimos" exhibition at the Instituto de Arquitetos do Brasil (IAB/RJ) in Rio de Janeiro.

Sacilotto worked in Jacob Ruchti's architecture office in 1946 and participated in the "19 Pintores" exhibition at Galeria Prestes Maia in São Paulo, where he met Waldemar Cordeiro and Lothar Charoux. They later founded the Grupo Ruptura along with Geraldo de Barros, Féjer, Leopoldo Haar, and Anatol Wladyslaw. This group was crucial for his theoretical and practical development, which by 1948 already showed an abstract-constructive awareness.

In 1963, he was one of the founders of the Associação de Artes Visuais Novas Tendências. Luiz Sacilotto is considered one of the key concrete artists in Brazil and a precursor of Op Art in the country, with paintings that explore optical phenomena.
