Luiz Hermano

Luiz Hermano Façanha Farias was born in 1954 in Preaoca, a municipality of Cascavel in Ceará, Brazil. In the early 1970s, he studied philosophy in Fortaleza and, self-taught, began working with metal engraving and drawing. In 1979, he attended engraving classes with Carlos Martins at the School of Visual Arts at Parque Lage in Rio de Janeiro. In the same year, he moved to São Paulo and held the exhibition "Desenhos" at the São Paulo Museum of Art Assis Chateaubriand (MASP).

In 1984, Luiz Hermano received the Chandon Art and Wine Award, which allowed him to travel to Paris, where he had a solo exhibition at Galerie Debret. He participated in the 5th International Biennial of Seoul in 1983 and the 2nd Pan-American Biennial of Havana in 1986. During the 1980s, he mainly focused on painting.

In the 1990s, Hermano began developing three-dimensional works using a variety of materials, including wood, bamboo, and wires of copper, aluminum, and iron. He exhibited his paintings at the 19th São Paulo International Biennial in 1987 and his sculptures at the 21st edition of the event in 1991. In 1994, he presented the exhibition "Sculptures to Wear" at the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art (MAM/SP).

Later, Luiz Hermano started working with mass-consumption items, such as plastic toys and cleaning utensils, creating installations, panels, and objects that explore the aesthetic possibilities of these materials.
