Lothar Charoux

Austria - 1912 - 1987

Lothar Charoux was an Austrian-Brazilian painter, draughtsman, and teacher. He began his artistic studies with his uncle, the Austrian sculptor Siegfried Charoux. In 1928, Charoux moved to Brazil, settling in São Paulo. In the 1930s, he enrolled at the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios de São Paulo, where he met Waldemar da Costa and, starting in 1940, studied painting with him, focusing on landscapes and portraits.

Charoux later taught drawing at the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios and SENAI. His first solo exhibition took place in 1947 at the Galeria Itapetininga. In 1948, he began to explore constructive themes in his work. In 1952, he became one of the founders of the Grupo Ruptura, alongside artists such as Waldemar Cordeiro and Geraldo de Barros, a movement pivotal for Brazilian concretism.

In 1963, together with Hermelindo Fiaminghi and Luiz Sacilotto, Charoux founded the Associação de Artes Visuais NT - Novas Tendências, promoting new artistic approaches. He was honored with a retrospective at the Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo (MAM/SP) and the Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro (MAM/RJ) in 1974. In 2005, art historian Maria Alice Milliet published the book "Lothar Charoux: A Poética da Linha," celebrating his contribution to art.
