Loio-Pérsio

Loio-Pérsio Navarro Vieira de Magalhães (Tapiratiba, São Paulo, 1927 – Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, 2004) was a painter, draftsman, engraver, illustrator, graphic artist, and advertising professional. In 1943, he moved with his family to Curitiba, where he began studying painting with Guido Viaro (1897-1971). In 1948, he enrolled in the Faculty of Law at the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), but one year later, he decided to interrupt his studies and move to Rio de Janeiro. In Rio, he studied painting with Ado Malagoli (1906-1994) and scenography with Santa Rosa (1909-1956) at the National Theatre Service between 1949 and 1950.

In 1951, he returned to Curitiba and resumed his law studies, founding the Paraná Engraving Center in the same year. In 1952, he was invited by the state government to organize and direct the Alfredo Andersen House-Museum and the Paraná Pinacoteca, but resigned from his position a year later due to a lack of institutional support. He then worked in a shared studio with the German painter and engraver Gunther Schierz, a disciple of Käthe Kollwitz. He graduated in Social and Legal Sciences in 1955.

In 1958, he moved to São Paulo, where he worked in an advertising agency and designed book covers for Companhia Editora Nacional and Livraria Francisco Alves. In 1963, he won the overseas travel award from the National Salon of Modern Art and traveled to Europe the following year. In 1965, he was invited to teach at the Stuttgart School of Art, Germany. In 1970, he served as a jury member for the selection and awards of the National Salon of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro. Between 1975 and 1976, he traveled to Rome, London, and Paris, becoming a resident painter at the Karoly Foundation in 1974.

In 1981, he moved to Belo Horizonte, where he taught drawing and painting at the Guignard School. In 1995, he returned to Curitiba, where he spent his last years.
