Leon Ferrari

Leon Ferrari (Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1920 - Buenos Aires, 2013) was a painter, printmaker, sculptor, and multimedia artist, renowned for his innovative and critical contributions to visual arts.

Ferrari began his career as a sculptor in Italy, where he lived for three years and held a solo exhibition at the Cariola Gallery in Milan in 1955. In 1960, he started creating wire and stainless steel sculptures, and two years later, he began producing calligraphic drawings and collages.

In 1965, Ferrari became involved with the cultural and political movement at the Instituto di Tella in Buenos Aires, abandoning abstract production to engage in more politicized work. Between 1968 and 1969, he participated in the events "Tucumán Arde" and "Malvenido Rockefeller" in Buenos Aires, which criticized repression and imperialist policies.

In 1976, Ferrari moved to São Paulo, where he resumed producing metal sculptures. The following year, he began creating sound sculptures using metal bars and started exploring new expressive mediums, influenced by artists such as Regina Silveira and Julio Plaza. His artistic practice expanded to include videotext, microfiches, mail art, artist's books, and lithography.

Ferrari received the award from the Associação Paulista de Críticos de Arte (APCA) for best exhibition of the year in 1983. In 1984, he returned to Buenos Aires, where he continued to innovate by incorporating digital media into his works, as seen in "Electronicartes" (2002/2003).

In addition to his activities in visual arts, Ferrari published several books, including "Nosotros No Sabíamos" (1976), "Cuadro Escrito" (1984), "Exégesis" (1993), and "La Bondadosa Crueldad" (2000). In 2000, he received the Costantini Prize, solidifying his influence in the art world.
