Judith Lauand

Judith Lauand was born in 1922 in Pontal, São Paulo. She graduated in painting from the School of Fine Arts of Araraquara in 1950, under the guidance of Mario Ybarra de Almeida and Domenico Lazzarini. In 1952, she moved to São Paulo to study engraving with Lívio Abramo.

She began her professional career as a monitor at the 2nd São Paulo International Biennial in 1954, where she engaged with the concrete painting of figures such as Alexandre Wollner and Geraldo de Barros. That same year, she held her first solo exhibition at the Galeria Ambiente in São Paulo. In 1955, she joined the Ruptura Group, led by Waldemar Cordeiro, standing out as the only woman in the group until its dissolution.

Lauand participated in the National Exhibition of Concrete Art in 1956 and 1957 at the Museums of Modern Art in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, respectively. In 1960, she was featured in the Konkrete Kunst show in Zurich and, in 1963, co-founded the NT - New Trends Gallery in São Paulo with Hermelindo Fiaminghi and Luiz Sacilotto. She received the Leirner Prize for Contemporary Art in 1958.

In 1996, a retrospective exhibition focusing on her works from the 1950s was dedicated to her by the Sylvio Nery da Fonseca Art Office in São Paulo.
