José Pancetti

Giuseppe Gianinni Pancetti (Campinas, São Paulo, 1902 – Rio de Janeiro, 1958) was a Brazilian painter renowned for his works primarily depicting landscapes, portraits, and seascapes. His seascapes, reflecting his experience as a sailor, are particularly celebrated.

The son of Italian immigrants, Pancetti returned with his family to Italy at the age of 11 due to financial difficulties. After training as a carpenter and working in various factories, he joined the Italian Merchant Navy in 1919. However, he abandoned this career and returned to Brazil, living in Santos and taking on various jobs, including as a textile worker and goldsmith's assistant.

In 1921, in São Paulo, he began working as a wall and poster painter and was invited by Italian-Brazilian painter Adolfo Fonzari to assist in decorating a house in Guarujá. The following year, he enlisted in the Brazilian Navy, where he started painting his first works aboard the battleship Minas Gerais.

Pancetti became a member of the Núcleo Bernardelli, where he was guided by Polish artist Bruno Lechowski, acquiring technique and artistic maturity. Portraiture emerged as one of the most constant genres in his work, characterized by simplified compositions and expressions that often reflect despondency.

In the 1940s, he began exploring urban landscapes in dark, melancholic tones. His works reflect the influence of great masters like Cézanne and Matisse, while his seascapes, simplified and featuring zigzag lines, capture the beauty of the Southeast Brazilian coastline, including places like Cabo Frio and Arraial do Cabo.

In 1950, Pancetti settled in Bahia, where his palette transformed, incorporating warm, luminous colors. He painted various scenes of Salvador, emphasizing the Lagoa do Abaeté and the Farol da Barra, highlighting the contrast between the natural and cultural elements of the region.

Towards the end of his career, he began to approach abstraction, as seen in works like "Itapoã" (1957). José Pancetti, the name he adopted after the Portuguese version of his first name, is recognized as one of Brazil's great marine painters, whose works possess intense poetic depth and reveal a unique sensitivity in the use of color.
