José Orozco

José Clemente Orozco was one of the greatest Mexican painters and a leading figure in the Mexican Muralism movement, alongside Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros. A friend of Paiva, Orozco excelled primarily in mural painting but also engaged in easel painting, watercolor, drawing, and caricature, the latter more as a means of sustenance than as an art form.

The central theme of his work revolves around revolution and the struggle of the people to achieve their ideals and create a new society. His formal representation reflects a blend of aesthetic influences ranging from realism to expressionism, and including the Italian Renaissance art of the 15th and 16th centuries.

Between 1922 and 1949, Orozco painted a total of 4,700 square meters of murals in seventeen buildings in Mexico and four in the United States, leaving a significant legacy in both countries.
