José Bedia

José Braulio Bedia Valdés, born in 1959 in Havana, is a pivotal figure of the New Cuban Art Movement, a milestone in Cuban visual arts in the 1980s that transformed the perception of art and its social role on the island. His academic background was solidified at the prestigious San Alejandro Academy and at the Higher Institute of Arts (ISA) in Havana, being part of the first group of students at this institution after its foundation.

Bedia's work is deeply influenced by his practice in the Regla Palo Monte religion, an element that permeates both the theme and form of his art, extending to the spiritualities of Central American cultures. In 1993, Bedia moved to Miami, where he currently resides. This geographical change continues to influence his artistic production, allowing him to explore and integrate new cultural and spiritual contexts into his work.
