Jorge Guinle

Jorge Guinle Filho was a painter, draftsman, and printmaker widely recognized as one of the key figures in the revival of painting in Brazil during the 1980s. Born in New York, he moved to Rio de Janeiro as an infant, where he spent part of his childhood. Between 1955 and 1962, he lived in Paris and later in New York, accompanying his mother.

From an early age, Guinle developed a strong interest in the visual arts, pursuing self-directed studies in painting while regularly visiting museums, galleries, and cultural institutions throughout Europe and the United States. This continuous exposure to international artistic production played a decisive role in shaping his artistic vision, bringing him into contact with both modern masters and contemporary movements. Among his most significant influences were Henri Matisse, American Abstract Expressionism, and Pop Art.

During the late 1960s and early 1970s, he divided his time between Rio de Janeiro, London, and Paris. In 1977, he settled permanently in Rio de Janeiro, where he developed the most significant phase of his artistic career.

Although he also produced drawings and prints, Guinle is best known for his paintings. His work is characterized by energetic brushwork, vibrant color palettes, and a sophisticated dialogue with both modern and contemporary art history. Within a relatively short period, he gained national recognition and became part of major exhibitions and important collections.

Guinle played a pivotal role in the movement that renewed interest in painting within the Brazilian art scene of the 1980s. He participated in the landmark exhibition "How Are You, Generation 80?" at the School of Visual Arts of Parque Lage in Rio de Janeiro in 1984, contributed critical writings, and actively supported artists of his generation. Despite his untimely death, his legacy remains a significant chapter in the history of contemporary Brazilian art.
