Jorge Duarte

Jorge Duarte is a notable Brazilian visual artist with a 30-year career. His works are part of the collections of significant museums such as MAM (Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo) and MNBA (National Museum of Fine Arts), and owned by renowned Brazilian collectors like João Sattamini and Gilberto Chateubriand. After not exhibiting in Rio de Janeiro for five years, Duarte will present a retrospective of his artistic journey at the Art Collection in Flamengo, curated by Santiago Navarro, starting on August 21.

Duarte explores the multiplicity and diversity of influences in his work, which ranges from painting, engraving, drawings, and sculptures, always addressing conceptual issues about values and artistic references. His exhibition will include pieces ranging from haikus on canvases that refer to popular paintings on truck backs, to works that dialogue with art history, such as "Ceci kissed Peri", which interacts with Magritte's work and José de Alencar's literature, reflecting on Oswald de Andrade's anthropophagy.

The show also highlights his work "Ode to Alfacism", displaying lettuce on a meat board, and "home sweet home", a work on bovine leather with a pyrographed inscription. The artist defies categorization, mixing the popular and the erudite, diversifying materials and references.

Duarte, a member of the 80s Generation, was a founder of the Imaginário Periférico collective and received significant awards such as the Ivan Serpa Scholarship from FUNARTE and the Icatu Visual Arts Award, which provided him a six-month residency in Paris. The exhibition offers an immersion into Duarte's work, revealing the complexity and richness of his artistic expression.
