Ivan Marquetti

Ivan João Alvarez Marquetti (Rio de Janeiro, RJ, April 21, 1941 – Ouro Preto, MG, October 2, 2004), known as Ivan Marquetti, was a Brazilian painter, draftsman, and printmaker. His works are characterized by the use of thickly applied paint with a spatula, creating unique textures in his landscapes and old houses. Marquetti captured scenes from historic cities in Minas Gerais and nature themes, including his famous journey through the Amazon, where he painted the landscapes of the Rio Negro’s source.

Marquetti studied engraving and drawing at the Guanabara Institute of Fine Arts from 1958 to 1961, and in 1962, he moved to Ouro Preto, where he lived most of his life. He was close to influential figures like Carlos Scliar, Inimá de Paula, Vinícius de Moraes, and Carlos Bracher. In 1963, he traveled to Paris to enhance his artistic skills. Back in Brazil, Marquetti divided his time between various cities such as Rio de Janeiro, Olinda, and other historic towns in Minas Gerais.

In 1967, he founded the Group of Serigraphy in Rio de Janeiro, and between 1979 and 1981, he explored the Amazon forests and rivers, drawing inspiration for a series of works on nature. Marquetti is remembered for his unique style, which blends the fauvist palette with an expressionism characterized by straight lines and vibrant colors, reflecting his singular vision of the Brazilian landscape.
