Irene Buarque

Irene Buarque de Gusmão, born in São Paulo in 1943, is a prominent Brazilian painter. Since the beginning of her career in the 1960s, Irene has been an active participant in the Brazilian art scene, marking her presence in important events and exhibitions.

Her career includes notable participations such as in the 9th São Paulo International Biennial in 1967 at the Bienal Foundation, and in the 3rd and 5th editions of Young Contemporary Art in 1969 and 1971, respectively, at the Museum of Contemporary Art at the University of São Paulo. Additionally, she was present at the 1st São Paulo Salon of Contemporary Art in 1969 at the São Paulo Art Museum, and at the São Paulo Pre-Biennial in 1970.

In 1971, Irene participated in the 7th Campinas Salon of Contemporary Art and the 8th Panorama of Current Brazilian Art in 1976, at the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art. Her works were also exhibited at the 2nd National Salon of Fine Arts in 1979 at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro.

During the 80s and 90s, she continued to exhibit widely, including participations in the Foto/Idéia exhibitions in 1981 and 1987 at the Museum of Contemporary Art at the University of São Paulo, and at the Brazil 20th Century Biennial in 1994. More recently, in 1996, her works were part of the exhibition "Brazilian Art: 50 Years of History in the MAC/USP Collection: 1920-1970", and in 2003 in the exhibition "Treasures of the Box: Brazilian Modern Art in the Collection of Caixa" at Caixa Cultural in Rio de Janeiro.

Irene Buarque de Gusmão is recognized for her significant contribution to Brazilian art, with a career that reflects a deep exploration of painting and a constant participation in prestigious exhibitions that help shape the artistic panorama of the country.
