Igor Romualdo

In recent years, Brazil has stood out in the international art scene, especially for providing visibility to highly valuable artists who were on the fringes of the art system. The exhibition "My Territory," presented in São Paulo by J.B Goldenberg - Art Office, is a foretaste of prominence among the young artists active in Brazil today. This selection brings to the public the vigorous work in woodcut of Igor Romualdo, a member of the Xiloceasa collective and a visitor to the Acaia Institute since he was 8 years old.

Igor is a skilled artist and draftsman who establishes his creative process sustained by the richness of details that the woodcut support, wood, offers. His creation moves through the registration of elements of Brazilian fauna and establishes a poetic dialogue between the drawing carved by the gouge in the wood, added to the signs marked by time and nature in the formation of its veins and textures.

The selected works propose various characters from nature, established by a chromatic unity between the paper and its fusion with the ink transferred from the wood matrix. This dimension is imbued by the artist in the work, the result of the subtle interplay between reason and emotion.

Igor is an artist attentive to his surroundings and always seeks spontaneous references for his compositions, like the most recent ones, fruits of his journey through the rivers of Mato Grosso do Sul. In his creative process, he stands out for drawing directly on the support without prior studies, preferring to bring directly from his visual memory the traces he carves in the wood.

It is not just about a "popular aesthetic"; his work is the result of observing life and its continuity established through art, recorded in characters or figures, symbolic scenes. Sometimes enigmatic, sometimes formal, Igor carves his territory to build poetry and purely guide the observer into his imagistic world.
