Francisco Stockinger

Francisco Alexandre Stockinger (Traun, Austria, 1919 - Porto Alegre, RS, 2009) was a renowned sculptor, printmaker, designer, caricaturist, wood engraver, and teacher who settled in Brazil. Arriving in the country in 1921, Stockinger settled in São Paulo in 1929, where he studied drawing with Anita Malfatti at Colégio Mackenzie. In 1937, he moved to Rio de Janeiro and began his studies at the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios do Rio de Janeiro in 1946. During this period, he interacted with important artists such as Bruno Giorgi, Oswaldo Goeldi, Marcelo Grassmann, and Maria Leontina.

In addition to his artistic activities, Stockinger created caricatures and political cartoons for newspapers. In 1954, he moved to Porto Alegre to work on the layout of the newspaper A Hora and began producing woodcuts. Naturalized Brazilian in 1956, he was elected president of the Associação Rio-Grandense de Artes Plásticas Francisco Lisboa, a position he held again in 1978.

Stockinger was instrumental in founding and directing the Atelier Livre da Prefeitura de Porto Alegre in 1961 and directed the Museu de Arte do Rio Grande do Sul Ado Malagoli and the Art Division of the Department of Culture of the State's Secretary of Education and Culture in 1967. In 1985, he taught a live model sculpture course with Vasco Prado at Margs. His contributions to culture and the arts were recognized with the title of honorary citizen of Porto Alegre in 1994 and an award from the Ministry of Culture in the area of visual arts in 1997.
