Emmanuel Nassar

Emmanuel da Cunha Nassar (born in Capanema, Pará, 1949) is a Brazilian painter, draftsman, and photographer known for his sharp sense of humor and for establishing dialogues between popular aesthetics and erudite art. He graduated in architecture from the Federal University of Pará (UFPA) in 1974, and also has experience in advertising. He began his artistic journey working with acrylic on canvas and later explored techniques such as relief on wood. From 1980, he served as a professor of art education at UFPA. His work is marked by the fusion of popular visual traditions, with vibrant colors and geometric shapes, and constructive traditions of erudite Brazilian art. He has received recognition and major awards, such as the gold medal at the 3rd Graphic Biennial of Florence in 1972 and various awards from the São Paulo Association of Art Critics (APCA). In 1988, he taught graphic arts and sculpture at The City University of New York. Between 1992 and 2002, he directed the São Paulo State Pinacoteca, where he carried out significant revitalizations. Since 2004, he has been the curator and director of the Afro-Brazil Museum in São Paulo, a space that houses works from his collection and celebrates Afro-Brazilian culture.
