Décio Pignatari

Décio Pignatari (Jundiaí, São Paulo, 1927 - 2012) was an influential Brazilian poet and essayist, as well as a professor, communication theorist, and translator. A central figure in the Concrete Poetry movement, he was born to Italian immigrants and grew up in Osasco. In 1948, he enrolled in the Law course at the University of São Paulo (USP), but soon turned to poetry. Along with brothers Haroldo and Augusto de Campos, he founded the concrete poetry movement, which sought to fuse verbal and visual expressions, reflecting the dynamics and sensibilities of urban areas. His first published work was "Carrossel" (1950), featuring a collection of poems with strong imagery and semantic innovations.
