Clemencia Echeverri

Clemencia Echeverri Mejía (born February 7, 1950, in Salamina, Colombia) is a renowned Colombian visual arts professor, contemporary art historian, and theorist. Early in her career, Echeverri worked with sculpture and painting, but eventually found her true artistic expression in photography, installation, and video installation. These mediums allowed her to deeply explore and connect with Colombia's socio-political situations, as well as address issues of memory and violence that affect her home country.

Echeverri studied Visual Communication at the Pontifical Bolivarian University (1974) and Fine Arts at the University of Antioquia (1983). She later completed a specialization in Contemporary Art Theory and History and a Master's in Sculpture at Chelsea College of Arts and Design in London (1994-1995).

Initially, she focused on painting with an expressionist approach but soon transitioned to sculpture, forming a group of influential sculptors in Colombia. After returning from London in 1997, she fully dedicated herself to installation and video installation. Her foray into video art began with the exhibition "The Exposed Look" (1997). One of her most recognized works from this period is the video installation "Casa Íntima," presented at the National Salon of Artists during the VII Havana Biennial, Cuba (1998).

Echeverri also had a notable academic career, teaching fine arts at the University of Antioquia and the National University of Colombia from 1982 to 2009. She co-created the Master of Arts program at the National University of Colombia (1993) and was a researcher at Chelsea College Of Arts, London (2003).
