Christian Cravo

Born in 1974 to a Danish mother and a Brazilian father, Christian Cravo grew up in an artistic environment in Salvador, Bahia.

Immersed in art from an early age, he discovered his passion for photography during his adolescence in Denmark, where he began experimenting with the camera at the age of eleven.

In 1993, he temporarily interrupted his artistic pursuits to serve in the Danish Armed Forces. At twenty-two, he returned to Brazil and devoted himself fully to photography, developing a poetic and symbolic approach to themes such as life, death, faith, and ancestry.

Over the years, his work has achieved national and international recognition, with exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art of Bahia, Instituto Tomie Ohtake, Museu Afro Brasil, Throckmorton Fine Art (New York), Billedhusets Galeri (Copenhagen), and the Palais de Tokyo (Paris), among others.

Cravo has received awards from the Museum of Modern Art of Bahia, the Mother Jones International Fund for Documentary Photography, and research grants from the Vitae Foundation and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. In 2016, he was honored by the São Paulo Association of Art Critics (APCA) for the best photography exhibition of 2015.

He has been nominated for major international prizes, including the Paul Huf Award (Netherlands, 2007) and the Prix Pictet (Switzerland/United Kingdom, 2008, 2015, and 2016).

Among his published books are Irredentos (2000 and 2005), Roma Noire, Ville Métisse (Paris, 2005), In the Gardens of Eden (2010), Exú Iluminado (2012), Christian Cravo (Cosac & Naify, 2014), and Mariana (2016).

He currently lives in São Paulo, is married, and the father of three daughters.
