Boi

José Carlos “Boi” Cezar Ferreira (Marília, SP, 1944) is a Brazilian visual artist working across painting, drawing, and sculpture. He lives and works in São Paulo.

Between 1968 and 1969, he studied drawing at the Chouinard Art School in Los Angeles. Upon returning to Brazil, he joined Escola Brasil:, where he studied under artists such as Carlos Fajardo, Luiz Paulo Baravelli, Frederico Nasser, and José Resende. In 1974, he became a teacher at the same institution.

His first solo exhibition took place at the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP) in 1976. In the same year, he received a travel award at the 7th São Paulo Contemporary Art Salon, which led to a trip to Europe the following year.

Throughout his career, his work has engaged with references from Brazilian art history. In 2000, at Galeria Nara Roesler, he presented a series of monotypes paying tribute to Aleijadinho and the landscapes of Guignard. In more recent works, including those exhibited in 2004, he turned his focus to urban landscapes.
