Antônio Maia

Antonio Maia, born in 1928 in Carmópolis, Sergipe, built a multifaceted career as a painter, draftsman, printmaker, and illustrator. His childhood in the rural landscape of Sergipe played a decisive role in shaping his artistic vision, especially his connection to the popular religiosity and cultural imagery of the Brazilian Northeast—motifs that would later appear throughout his work.

In 1955, Maia moved to Rio de Janeiro, where he established himself professionally. During this period, he embraced informal abstraction and embarked on an extensive investigation of textures, a central focus of his production between 1955 and 1963. His first solo exhibition took place in 1960 in Cataguases, Minas Gerais, marking his entry into the national art scene.

In 1968, he received a travel grant to the United States from the gallery of the Brazil–United States Cultural Institute, an experience that broadened his artistic horizons. In 1973, the Art Gallery of Ontario, in Canada, acquired works from the artist, consolidating his presence beyond Brazil.

Antonio Maia passed away in Rio de Janeiro in 2008, leaving behind a body of work distinguished by experimentation, the strength of Northeastern cultural memory, and a consistent investigation of material and visual expression.
