Alice Brill

Alice Brill Czapski (Cologne, Germany, 1920 - Itu, SP, 2013). Photographer, painter, printmaker, and draftsman.

Alice Brill came to Brazil in 1934, fleeing the Nazi regime, and quickly integrated into the local art scene. In the early 1940s, she was involved with the Grupo Santa Helena in São Paulo, one of the leading artist collectives of the time. From 1946 to 1947, she studied at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and the Art Student's League in New York, where she honed her artistic skills.

Upon returning to Brazil, she worked for Habitat magazine, photographing architecture and artworks from 1948 to 1960. Invited by Pietro Maria Bardi, director of the Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand (MASP), she undertook an extensive photographic project documenting everyday life in São Paulo in 1953 and 1954. Her career as a photographer was primarily active between 1948 and 1960, during which she captured significant aspects of Brazilian urban and cultural life.

In addition to photography, Alice Brill dedicated herself to oil painting, initially focusing on urban landscapes and later exploring abstraction. She graduated in Philosophy from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC/SP) in 1976, followed by a master's degree in 1982 and a doctorate in 1994 from the University of São Paulo (USP). She published several books, including "Mario Zanini e Seu Tempo" (1984) and "Samson Flexor - Do Figurativismo ao Abstracionismo" (1990), establishing herself as an important art historian as well.

In 2005, a retrospective titled "O Mundo de Alice Brill" was held, showcasing part of her photographic production from the Instituto Moreira Salles (IMS) collection, highlighting her significant contribution to Brazilian art.
