Joana Baptista Vasconcelos (Paris, November 8, 1971) is a renowned Portuguese visual artist noted for representing Portugal at the Venice Biennale in 2013. Her rise to international prominence was highlighted by an exhibition at the Palace of Versailles in 2012, invited by the institution’s president, Jean-Jacques Aillagon. This exhibition made her the first woman and the youngest contemporary artist to display at Versailles, drawing the largest attendance in fifty years. Vasconcelos has also shone on other international stages, such as the Echigo Tsumari Triennial in Japan in 2006, the "Contaminação" exhibition at the São Paulo State Pinacoteca in 2008, and a group show at the François Pinault Foundation in Moscow in 2009. Additionally, her work encompasses a series of installations and sculptures that probe themes of consumption and identity through the recontextualization of everyday objects.
