Painter, Draughtsman, and Sculptor

José de Souza Oliveira Filho, known as Macaparana, was born in 1952 in Macaparana, Pernambuco, Brazil. A self-taught artist, he began his career as a figurative painter and held his first solo exhibition in 1970 at the Gallery of the Pernambuco Tourism Company (Empetur) in Recife.

Career and Artistic Transformation
In 1972, Macaparana moved to Rio de Janeiro, and a year later, he settled permanently in São Paulo. For about ten years, his works focused on themes related to ex-votos, a type of votive art associated with religious promises.

A significant turning point in his career came in 1983 when Macaparana met Willys de Castro, a prominent figure of Brazilian neoconcretism. This encounter was crucial for the transformation of his work, which began to incorporate elements of neoconcrete art, characterized by the search for a new visual language and the interaction between the artwork and the viewer.

Exhibitions and Recognition
Macaparana participated in the 21st São Paulo International Biennial in 1991, an event that solidified his position in the Brazilian and international art scenes. His work has been exhibited in various Brazilian cities, such as São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Recife, and Brasília, as well as abroad, including Mexico, Japan, New York, and London.

In 2009, he held a solo exhibition of sculptures, paintings, and drawings at Galeria Cayon in Madrid and participated in the group show "Materia Gris" at the same gallery.

Style and Influences
Macaparana is known for his ability to navigate between different techniques and styles, combining elements of the figurative with the abstract and exploring three-dimensionality in his sculptures. His work is marked by geometric sensitivity and an aesthetic refinement that reflect his neoconcrete influences.
