Roberto de Oliveira Magalhães was born in 1940 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He is a renowned painter, draftsman, and printmaker, known for his unique style and significant contribution to Brazilian art.

Career and Education:
Roberto began his artistic journey working at his uncle's print shop, creating labels and advertisements. Later, he designed book and album covers, as well as advertising drawings. In 1961, he attended courses at the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes (Enba) as a free student. During the 1960s, he participated in various group exhibitions in Brazil and abroad.

Exhibitions and Awards:
In 1962, Roberto exhibited ink drawings at the Macunaíma Gallery, attached to Enba. His first solo exhibition of woodcuts took place in 1964 at the Petite Galerie in Rio de Janeiro. The following year, he received the printmaking prize at the 4th Paris Biennale. In 1966, he won the travel abroad prize at the 15th National Salon of Modern Art (SNAM) with the woodcut "Édipo Decifra o Enigma da Esfinge." In Paris, he exhibited with Antonio Dias at the Debret Gallery in 1968.

Influences and Changes:
Studies in occultism, theosophy, and especially his approach to Buddhism from 1969 onwards led him to reside for four years at the Meditation Center of the Buddhist Society of Brazil, during which he temporarily interrupted his artistic activities. In 1975, Roberto resumed his work in art, holding solo exhibitions of drawings and paintings in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, and teaching at the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro (MAM/RJ).

Recognition and Legacy:
During the 1980s, he participated in various group exhibitions of prints and drawings. In 1992, the Banco do Brasil Cultural Center (CCBB) in Rio de Janeiro organized a retrospective of Roberto Magalhães' 30 years of artistic production, the largest dedicated to his work to date, solidifying his legacy in the Brazilian art scene.
