Cássio Vasconcellos (São Paulo, Brazil, 1965) is a Brazilian photographer widely recognized for his experimental approach to photography and for creating images that move between documentary practice, fiction, and constructed landscapes. His work encompasses fine art photography, aerial imagery, photographic interventions, and large-scale panoramic compositions, establishing him as one of the leading figures in contemporary Brazilian photography.

He began studying photography in 1981 at Escola Imagem-Ação in São Paulo. A few years later, he started his career as a photojournalist, working for IstoÉ magazine and later for Folha de S.Paulo. At the end of the 1980s, he relocated to Paris, where he worked as a freelance photographer for Brazilian publications. Upon returning to Brazil, he established his own studio, specializing in aerial photography, which became a defining element of his artistic practice.

Alongside his commercial work, Vasconcellos developed personal projects that challenge the documentary nature of photography through image manipulation, fragmentation, montage, and experimental darkroom techniques. His 1994 publication Paisagens Marinhas (Seascapes) exemplifies this research, presenting photographs created from altered negatives and laboratory processes that give the images a print-like quality.

Throughout his career, he has received several prestigious awards, including the Funarte National Photography Award (1995), the J. P. Morgan Photography Award (1999), and the Porto Seguro Photography Award (2001). He also participated in multiple editions of the Arte/Cidade project in São Paulo and received the Brazilian Association of Art Critics (ABCA) Award for his exhibition Noturnos – São Paulo, which was later published as a book.

From 2003 to 2004, Vasconcellos was an artist-in-residence at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. His work has since been exhibited extensively in museums, galleries, and biennials worldwide and is represented in significant public and private collections in Brazil and abroad.
