Luiz Monken was born in 1954 in Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro, where he continues to live and develop his artistic practice. His career has been shaped by solo and group exhibitions held at significant institutions and spaces dedicated to contemporary art in Brazil and abroad.

Throughout the 1990s, Monken expanded his presence within the Brazilian art scene. In 1993, he received an award at the 13th National Salon of Visual Arts in Rio de Janeiro and later participated in the 14th and 16th editions of FUNARTE's National Salon of Visual Arts, held in 1994 and 1998, respectively. He also took part in the 3rd and 4th Bahia Salons in Salvador between 1996 and 1997.

During the same period, he presented solo exhibitions at venues including FUNARTE's Galeria Macunaíma in Rio de Janeiro in 1995 and Espaço Cultural Sergio Porto, also in Rio, in 1997. That year, his work was also shown at Paço das Artes in São Paulo and at IBEU's art galleries in Copacabana and Madureira. In 1999, he held a solo exhibition at Galeria Paes Arte Contemporânea in Teresópolis. His work also reached an international audience through a presentation at Espaço Cultural Jorge Amado at the Brazilian Embassy in France, Paris, in 1994.

From the early 2000s onward, his career encompassed further institutional projects and international exhibitions. In 2001, he participated in “The Thread Unraveled: Contemporary Brazilian Art” at El Museo del Barrio in New York. The following year, he took part in “El Hilo de la Trama” at MALBA in Buenos Aires, as well as the Interferências Urbanas project in Rio de Janeiro. Also in 2002, he held a solo exhibition at Fundação Pinacoteca Benedicto Calixto in Santos, São Paulo.

In 2003, Monken participated in exhibitions and projects including Espaço AB and Super Orlândia in Rio de Janeiro, as well as Plataforma de Arte Contemporânea at the Imperial Museum in Petrópolis. That same year, his career was also associated with the 4th National Salon of Goiânia. In 2004, he presented a solo exhibition at Mercedes Viegas Arte Contemporânea and participated in “Arquivo Geral” in Rio de Janeiro.

In 2005, his work was included in the exhibition “Novas Aquisições” at the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro (MAM Rio), as well as in the inaugural edition of SP-Arte in São Paulo.

Luiz Monken's career reflects an artistic practice developed across independent spaces, galleries, salons, and museum institutions, engaging with different contexts within Brazilian contemporary art. His participation in exhibitions in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Bahia, and Goiás, alongside presentations in Paris, Buenos Aires, and New York, places his work within a trajectory that extends beyond his native Petrópolis and establishes connections with both Brazilian and international art circuits.
