Paulo Gagarin (1885, Saint Petersburg, Russia - 1980, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) was a self-taught artist who was captivated by the exuberance of the tropical flora and the colors of the Brazilian coastline, which he represented in a style close to the post-impressionists. Gagarin studied at the university in his hometown in 1900. He served in the Russian army in Europe and Asia between 1911 and 1914, and fought in the Russian ranks during World War I from 1914 to 1918. He emigrated to France in 1919, following the triumph of the 1917 socialist revolution that led to the downfall of Tsarism. In 1921, he arrived in Brazil as a steward on the ship Pelotas, following the common fate of many Russian political refugees of his condition.
