João José Rescala (Rio de Janeiro, 1910 - Salvador, 1986) was a Brazilian painter, illustrator, designer, restorer, and professor. He studied at the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios in Rio de Janeiro and, in 1928, entered the National School of Fine Arts (Enba), learning from masters such as Rodolfo Chambelland and Manoel Santiago. In 1931, he co-founded the Bernardelli Group, frequently exhibiting at the National Salon of Fine Arts and receiving several awards. In 1943, his awards allowed him to travel through the United States, where he held solo exhibitions. He moved to Salvador in 1956, taking up the position of professor at the School of Fine Arts at UFBA and later became the director of the school. Rescala also worked as a technician for the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage (Iphan), restoring religious artworks in various states. His art, influenced by the luminosity of Bahia, often features genre scenes and local landscapes, highlighting Bahian life and culture.
