Lucas Simões

Não-Ditos Mixed media , 2013 30 x 40 x 5 cm

Lucas Simões was born in 1980 in Catanduva, São Paulo, and currently lives and works in São Paulo. With a background in architecture and design, his experiences in architecture have redefined his perceptions of art and opened new paths of discovery. For Simões, “a drawing is more than a drawing: it is the intention that something concrete will materialize through the construction process.” This perspective has significantly influenced his drawing process and constructive approach in his work with collage and sculpture.

Simões is known for his great inventiveness in using raw materials such as maps, books, and photographs, which he folds, cuts, and deconstructs into new forms. He explains: “In my work, the materiality of the support is important. The manufacturing process of the support is part of the artwork and is achieved through experiments such as burning, cutting, distortions, or dilutions, which, in their most extreme forms, can destroy the object.”

In his constructive experiments, Lucas Simões aims to intervene in the original meaning of an object or image, creating a new representation that oscillates between beauty and strangeness, movement, and depth. He comments: “There is a kind of perversion in this, in taking the meaning out of some context. Strangeness is something that fascinates me, and making it beautiful is even better.”
