Sebastião Salgado (Aimorés, Minas Gerais, Brazil, February 8, 1944 – Paris, France, May 23, 2025) was one of Brazil's most acclaimed documentary photographers and photojournalists. Internationally recognized, he devoted his career to documenting the human condition, social change, and the relationship between people and nature.

Originally trained as an economist at the Federal University of Espírito Santo, with graduate studies at the University of São Paulo and a doctorate from the University of Paris, Salgado began his professional career in economics. During work assignments in Africa in the early 1970s, he discovered photography and decided to pursue it full-time in 1973.

Over a career spanning more than four decades, he traveled to more than 120 countries, producing influential photographic essays that resulted in internationally acclaimed books and exhibitions. Among his most celebrated projects are Other Americas, Sahel, Workers, Exodus, Genesis, and Amazônia, which explore themes such as labor, migration, environmental conservation, and cultural diversity.

Renowned for his striking black-and-white imagery, Salgado's photographs combine artistic excellence with a profound humanitarian perspective, highlighting resilience, dignity, and the complexities of contemporary society. He received numerous international awards, served as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, and, together with his wife Lélia Wanick Salgado, founded the Instituto Terra, an internationally recognized environmental restoration initiative in Brazil.
